I had to push through the initial third of the book as I found the poems generally uninteresting. As Graves sloughed off the stylistic conventions of a past era I felt more engaged with his imagery, some of which is striking, but it felt too little and too fleeting. Whilst this was mildly disappointing, I'm not put off from possibly exploring his later poetry, though I won't be actively seeking it out any time soon. I still love his historical fiction, though. Disambiguation notice
This work is intended to represent the Penguin Poets edition of Robert Graves' poetry first published in 1957. It was reissued in a 'revised and enlarged edition' in 1961. These editions have a very brief foreword by the author thanking his publisher, Cassell, for permitting him to make the selection from volumes, then still in print, published by them. The selection is Graves' own. Despite the revision, to include some poems written between 1957 and 1961, I think it makes sense to regard both these as a single work, not least because it is not possible to identify accurately which of the books listed here are the earlier printing and which the later.

In 1986 Penguin published Robert Graves - Selected Poems in their Twentieth Century Classics series. This contains a descriptive and critical Introduction by Paul O'Prey which makes it clear that this selection is his own and not Graves'. Despite the considerable overlap in the content of this and the earlier Penguin I think this should be regarded as a different work. Please do not combine them.
