Light hearted, fun, adventurous. The grandchildren love reading it. ( )

It was fun to see the backstory of Harold and George; however, this installment of the Captain Underpants series was heavy - literally and figuratively. The ratio of words to pictures was significantly higher than in the earlier books. This made the story more interesting to me, but slightly less engaging for my six year old... the reason for my reading the series in the first place. It took us much longer to plough through #9 than any of #s 1-8. Already started #10 and it seems to be more of the same. Maybe we'll finish it by Valentine's Day? ( )

This time-travel epic focuses on George and Harold when they met at age 6, became friends and joined forces to battle the 6th grade bully and his goons who've been terrorizing the kindergarteners. Typical wackiness ensues! Although you have to wonder at the cunning of mere 6 year olds...

The main message for this book is that good guys will always win over evil.
I enjoyed this book because of the silly plot. I enjoyed the outrageousness of a superhero principal and two young boys. It was also interesting to see that this book had a time hop portion. It was such an easy transition that I almost forgot that it was a time hop. I also enjoyed that the origin story for the friendship of the two boys was explained during this book considering that it is the 9th book of the series.
I also enjoyed the silly comments throughout the book that were aimed more towards older readers such as “there is no room for common sense when it came to zero tolerance” (referring to the zero tolerance rule for schools). The book is filled with such comments and I think it is quite humorous for older readers and helps appeal to more children. I also enjoyed the style in which the book is written in. Many children would rather look at pictures then read long paragraphs but this book contains both, allowing children to enjoy the graphics while having the children interested enough to read the long paragraphs. Summary: This book is part of a series and starts with George and Harold running away from Tippy Tinkletrousers. He is disrupting the timeline, kind of like a butterfly effect for the main characters. It also helps serve as a prequel to the whole series.

Personal connection: I had never read a Captain Underpants book, and this one seemed pretty far into the series so it was a bit confusing. I could definetly tell how younger students would be interested in this book.

Class use: Have students illustrate their own graphic novel. ( )
