Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (original 1999; edition 2001)

Őszbe csavarodott szakállú, kasszázástól görcsös-göcsörtös ujjú, könyvfesztek és kiadói napok forgatagában acélozott könyves vagyok én. Láttam már lehullani sokakat a sikerlisták ormairól úgy, hogy sosem tápászkodtak fel. A napon gyémántként csillogó vámpírok, bár egykor dögletes példányszámokban adtam el őket, ma már a lőtéri kutyát nem érdeklik. A szürke ötven árnyalatát csak a beton- és cementiparban érdekeltek keresik, de ők is csak tévedésből. Ám Harry Potter! Ő még mindig ott áll a vártán. Mindig újra kell rendelni, újra kell nyomni, mert ma is veszik, mint a cukrot. És jól teszik, ha veszik. Mert azt kell mondjam én, az őszbe csavarodott szakállú (etc, etc), hogy Harry Potter olyan klasszikus, amitől a magamfajta vén rozmárok is megnyalják a tíz ujjukat. Még én is gyermeki izgalommal zúztam le egy ültő helyemben az uccsó 150 oldalt, mert nem bírtam letenni. (Pedig láttam a filmet, szóval el van spoilerezve a meglepetés előre. És mégis.) Nem mondom, az első pár fejezet még az akklimatizációé volt – kicsit sokallottam „az előző rész tartalmából”-típusú betoldásokat. De aztán az ember belehoppanál Rowling varázsvilágába, és akkor aztán ott ragad. Hálás vagyok, hogy Rowling nem úgy ír ifjúsági regényt, mintha csak értelmileg kissé fejletlenebb felnőtteknek írna. Mer sötét lenni, mer komplex, feloldhatatlannak tűnő konfliktusokkal dolgozni, meri megtagadni (vagy legalábbis végtelennek tűnő ideig visszatartani) a feloldozást, amitől az olvasó gyakorlatilag függő viszonyba kerül a történettől – mert amíg a feloldozás nincs meg, addig kénytelen űzni-hajtani tovább az eseményeket. (Persze ehhez az kell, hogy a szerző az egész ívet egyben lássa, egyetlen egybefüggő organizmusként legyen képes kezelni.) Akárhogy is, ennek a sorozatnak nehéz eltúlozni a jelentőségét.

Bár ne lenne ilyen rút a kemény fedeles kiadás borítója. ( )

I can't really write anything without spoilers but it still gave me a huge adrenaline rush and I truly enjoyed it with several important plot twists long spoiled for me. There we go: I also enjoyed the feeling of being a bit less lost than usual with the parents' friends around. A bit more protected, even if they were the ones needing protection more than the kids at times. The next best thing to having his own dad back, indeed. Loved it to bits. I can fully understand all the fuss and fandom around these series. Now, how can I get my hands on the next one? ( )

While this review indicates a 2022 read date, I had read this book several times before that.
EDIT 2022: I added two thousand more words to the furious blog post I originally wrote in 2019, and the post might need a part II. She's a raging anti-Semite. I watched the Jon Stewart clip and I, a Conservative Jewish person, laughed and agreed with him. I'm so sorry he had to apologize in order to save his career while she wrings out every dollar she can of a series she wrote twenty years ago. This book itself...doesn't hold the same sense of wonder it once did. I feel comfortable not reading it again, and am going through the series to learn if I feel this way about the other books.

EDIT 2021: I wrote a furious blog post about how problematic this series is in 2019, before JKR decided to screech about her terrible opinions about trans women. Trans women are women. This series is problematic for a lot of reasons. I will probably still read it annually because of what it represented for me once upon a time.

As a child, I was upset that Hermione didn't like Professor Trelawney. As an adult, yeah, I get it. I use Tarot cards from time to time and am mildly curious about other tools, and do believe there's something to it all, but that's it. Professor McGonagall's and Trelawney's interactions made me laugh, and at one point, I cackled with glee as I realized out loud, "Trelawney reminds me of (a famous author I don't care for)," and I subsided into giggles. Trelawney's a diva who can't admit she's wrong and thinks she's above everyone else. Snape is turning out to be a fascinating and memorable character. I vaguely remember some of what he does in the fourth book, so I continue to look forward to reading the rest of the series. ( )
