For Maria, nothing is certain. Her life is a chain of accidents. Friendship passes her by, and she's unimpressed by the devoted Ronny and his endless proposals of marriage. Maria lives in a world of her own - yet not of her own making. Stumbling through university, work, marriage and motherhood, she finds it hard to see what all the fuss is about. She is a young woman unable to control the direction of her life. Will it end, as it began, by accident? Or will something intervene to save the accidental woman from herself? 'Very funny.' Spectator 'Delightfully quirky.' Financial Times 'Slyly parodies the clichés of most first novels.' Guardian… (more)

Hmm... non so cosa ho letto di preciso. Il personaggio principale è piatto e nulladicente. E il finale è inconcludente. ( )

Heartless pedantry, or, if you prefer, satirical wit. Coe’s writing is sharp and poised, and mildly diverting as he shows off, cleverly subverting narrative conventions, but to what end? The story is not really about anything, the characters are mere ciphers, and the plot doesn’t progress. Plenty of potential shown here (as we can happily confirm from Coe’s later writings) but the feel of this book is that of a precocious sixth-former, not yet having had occasion to settle down to practical matters ( )

Maria che insegue, blandamente, la vita e che sempre la canna: non c'è sfortuna, c'est la vie...
Ma quanto risuona, fastidiosa, la sua vita nella nostra: Maria, o dello specchio dei tempi... ( )

Maria doesn't seem to fit in anywhere. She stumbles through as life apparently happens to her. From home, university, marriage, friends she seems to take little control.

What a strange book - but with enough to pique my interest about what was actually going to happen to her. A very sad story, but all worth it for chapter 9 which is very powerful. ( )
