He lost a wager... but won a treasure. Due to a lost wager, the Duke of Ravenham is obliged to bring a pretty little nobody from the country into fashion among the high-sticklers of London Society. Ravenham would never refuse a debt of honor, no matter how unorthodox, so he overlooks Miss Gordon's vulgar relations to do what is necessary, escorting the unsophisticated chit to balls, etc. But what he expects to be an irksome duty turns out to be something quite different as he falls under the spell of his protege's innocent charm. When he lost that wager, he definitely never counted on losing his heart as well! First impressions can be deceiving. Miss Gabriella Gordon only came to London at her mother's and sister's insistence, for she'd much rather assist in running her father's veterinary practice than attempt to fit into fashionable society. No sooner has she arrived in London than the exalted (and exceedingly handsome) Duke of Ravenham comes to call. The reason is less than flattering, however: due to a lost wager, the Duke is forced to bring Gabriella into fashion, a "favor" she would certainly refuse if her family would let her. But the more time she spends in the dashing Duke's company, the more conflicted she feels- particularly when she discovers they have more in common than she ever dared dream.… (more)

This book is is an excellent escape to recency romance. It did not matter that the characters lacked depth because they were delightfully adept at fulfilling their roles. There was mild tasteful turmoil for the protagonists amidst the flurry of scenes. ( )

Well this was adorable! The ending felt a little rushed, but it could just be that I wanted the book to be longer. :) “Gabriella” is a fun, clean read that featured really likable characters. Brie and Dexter were both charming, and even Angela, who was horrid, made me laugh. The story also includes a sweet rescued kitten and some newborn puppies. You know, for when you need a story like that. Which I pretty much always do :). 4.5 stars. ( )

Hey, it was free. The ebook, that is, offered no doubt because I've bought nearly every Georgette Heyer title available. Here we meet Gabriella, a young woman who lives in happy obscurity in the country until her sister, who made a good marriage and now resides in London, brings her to town for the Season, in hopes of snagging her own husband. Enter the Duke of Ravenham, who loses a bet and is therefore obliged to help launch "Brie" into society. Guess what happens next?

Brenda Hiatt is no Georgette Heyer despite the suspicious similarity of their last names, but she's not terrible. All the elements of a good Regency romance are there, just a bit subdued. The characters aren't as singular, the dialogue isn't as sharp, and the humor is not as sparkling or cutting as the OG provides. As Merle Haggard once sang, "It's Not Love, But It's Not Bad." ( )

This is truly one of the better regency novels. Ms. Hiatt did a lovely job setting up the scene, developing the characters, and creating some great dialogue. Brie (Gabriella) sounds like a lovely person and genuine friend. She's not terribly outspoken like her awful sister, Angela, but she's passionate about the things she loves. Her father's deceased, but she honors him by continuing to provide loving care to animals around her, including a mistreated kitten.

Dexter is a better man than most people around him. I think he's got good instincts about people and it shows because he doesn't allow "just anyone" to befriend his sister, Elizabeth. When he first meets Brie, the two don't think very much of each other. When they are reintroduced at another event, I was halfway wishing they would have a verbal show-down again, but that didn't happen! But I'm very pleased with how the story progressed and how their respect for one another slowly grew to "like" and then "love." It's really very nice! ( )

I enjoyed the storyline but didn't enjoy the writing style. It felt choppy and poorly developed. ( )
