The children's picture book, "Biscuit's Day at the Farm", is great for readers at the beginner level. It has large text, so the student can clearly see the words, allowing them to focus more on reading. It also contains many sight words, which are key to memorize in order to read. The story is also very repetitive, so the same words are used, which is helpful to both english language learners and new readers. The more practice they get with the same words, the easier those words will become. If a struggling student is passionate about or motivated by animals, this would be a great book to get them to read. Two units or class activities that I think would correspond well with the book are farms and responsibility. With learning about farms, there are many farm animals discussed and illustrated, such as pigs, chickens, goats, sheep, and geese. There are also many farm structures and equipment included, such as barns, pens, cages, and tractors.
In regards to a unit on responsibility, the story depicts the various chores Biscuit and the girl had to do to help out on the farm. The class could make a list of each chore shown in the story, and then discuss responsibilities, chores, and ways to make them fun.
I don't feel that the story line is strong enough to keep the entire class engaged for the whole time, since it is very repetitive, so I would not use this book for whole group shared reading; instead, I would use it for small group or individual reading. ( )

BISCUIT'S DAY AT THE FARM is a cute little book at the Kindergarten level. The accelerated reading number is 0.8. Lexile: 260L.

The story is about a visit to the farm where the Biscuit and his girl are helping out. The drama comes in with a piglet that won't stay in his pen.

Here's some sample text from two pages:

We must put
the piglet back.
Woof, woof!

Let's feed the sheep, Biscuit.
Woof, woof!

Like all of the Biscuit books the drawings in this one are in soft pastels which my kids always found appealing. The text is in a LARGE font.

Besides being a practice reader this book can be used with older babies and toddlers. There are lots of farm animals to point at --pigs, chickens, goats, sheep, and geese-- as well as farm structures and equipment, like barns, pens, cages and tractors.

This follows a little girl and her puppy's adventure on the farm. Throughout the story they meet and help different animals and Biscuit makes friends with a little piggy.

This is a great story for beginner reader's and has easy text and many sight words. ( )
