The accelerated reading number is 0.8. Lexile: 260L. The story is about a visit to the farm where the Biscuit and his girl are helping out. The drama comes in with a piglet that won't stay in his pen. Here's some sample text from two pages: We must put the piglet back. Woof, woof! Let's feed the sheep, Biscuit. Woof, woof! Like all of the Biscuit books the drawings in this one are in soft pastels which my kids always found appealing. The text is in a LARGE font. Besides being a practice reader this book can be used with older babies and toddlers. There are lots of farm animals to point at --pigs, chickens, goats, sheep, and geese-- as well as farm structures and equipment, like barns, pens, cages and tractors. ~ borrowed from the Library no reviews | add a review

In regards to a unit on responsibility, the story depicts the various chores Biscuit and the girl had to do to help out on the farm. The class could make a list of each chore shown in the story, and then discuss responsibilities, chores, and ways to make them fun.
I don't feel that the story line is strong enough to keep the entire class engaged for the whole time, since it is very repetitive, so I would not use this book for whole group shared reading; instead, I would use it for small group or individual reading. ( )
