This is probably my favorite book ever. I can never get enough of it. I relate to each of the March sisters and they have had a massive impact on my personality. Little Women is a book I can always revisit when sad, happy, or when I'm in a reading slump. ( )

I had just finished The Goldfinch, which was dark and deep and cynical. This was an exactly opposite read. It was sweet, and preachy and good. I though I had read this book before, but if I have, it's buried down deep. Like a good romantic comedy, I waited for everything to turn out right in the end for Meg, the wife, Jo, the writer, Amy, the beauty, Beth, the saint. And it turned out as it was supposed to be. Like a chord resolving. I read it so I can read March. I found I missed the characters a bit after I finished it. I always take that for a good sign. ( )

Three thoughts:

1. This was a lovely step back into childhood. I think that every "little" woman needs to read this book during their early teens. It makes life seem so normal, so non-threatening, so vast. Of course, the greatest creation is Marmee and her wisdom.

2. Much has been said by modern play- and screen- wrights about doing Jo a disservice, Louisa's copping out, etc. Perhaps Alcott did see it as such. But I, on the other hand, see Bhaer as one of her better creations. What a fortress... and did you catch the moments of doubt strewn throughout the pages? These moments, that were superseded by acts and thoughts of faith, were brilliantly realistic to me and probably deserve more viewing and less glossing over. But don't most adaptions of faith-filled books do that? And so we find religion, like less-savory parts of our history, censured out of our classics. This is a mild complaint, not approbation.

3. It's really hard to respect Bronson Alcott (and, therefore, Robert March-- even if she tries hard to make him sympathetic in the book. There's probably a reason that he's never quite fully formed). Really hard. It's likewise interesting to see the contrast in social opinions. In every Feminist book, Jo and Louisa are lauded as women ahead of their time, forerunners of the great equality that hasn't come yet. Women to be celebrated because they don't just want to settle down and have children. Yet, usually in the same book, Bronson is regarded as a freeloader, an oddball lazy man who refuses to work/support his family in the way that he should. Now I will support this statement-- he could have worked a bit more, paid less attention to young females, started less questionable compounds, and made life better for his long-suffering wife and daughters. But I don't think it is fair to require women to break the mold and chastise men for breaking theirs. Perhaps this attitude prevails because there was no other option for women... so men should be required to work. ( )

This re-read confirms that this remains one of my favourite books. ( )

This is a new favorite classic for me. I absolutely loved it. This book is like a hug. ( )

Almost every single line is overflowing with passion, the choice of words, the portrayal of characters, and the eloquence of emotions, all of this just makes me wonder how is it even possible for someone to write so elegantly with a simple yet appealing tone. This is surely one of those books where you know it is going to be a classic masterpiece at first glance. It delivers so well that I feel as if I am there, in that house along with the characters.

Go then, my little Book, and show all that entertain, and bid thee welcome shall, what thou dost keep close shut up in thy breast; and wish that thou dost show them may be blest to them for good, may make them choose to be pilgrims better, by far, than thee or me.
Tell them of Mercy; she is one who early hath her pilgrimage begun. Yea, let young damsels learn of her to prize the world which is to come, and so be wise; for little tripping maids may follow God along the ways which saintly feet have trod. - adapted from John Bunyan

Book description
