Book character and illustrations captivate the attention of younger readers. A story of life lssons can be applied to everyday life. Overall the book flows well, and gives readers a chance to explore together

I received this book for free as part of the Early Reviewers program. A very cute little picture book. The art is adorable and well done. The story is on the "frightening" side a bit, and would be best for kids who like a little bit of a scare (no bad ending, of course!). At the end of the book, there is some brief information on the various animals mentioned in the picture book and a little puzzle at the end. Adults who may not be quite as versed in their animals will probably also find the little reference at the end. From the writing, it should be a cute, a little scary, easy read for young readers. My only main complaint is sometimes the font and font color for some sentences was harder to make out on some pages. Bigger font size and some color changes would easily fix this, and I'm sure plenty wouldn't have an issue with the color choices. I'd take a peak inside before buying to see if it causes any issues for you or the child the book is intended for. ( )

This picture book features the adventures of a young sloth bear who wants to walk on his own. He encounters many creatures in the Western Ghat in India. Young readers will love listening to the rhyming text which includes fun descriptive sounds like "Splish-splash-dash" and "Gulp-flip-flop." The illustrations are large and colorful, often being two-page spreads. The end of the book has a compilation of the different animals, with pictures and a few short facts about each of them. There is also a short maze and a link to a free activities book. I think young readers will enjoy this young sloth bear's adventures and warning about wandering off as well as the beautiful pictures and fun sing-songy story. ( )

"Gugulu, the little bear dares" is the story of a Sloth Bear who thinks he is quite grown enough to go to school on his own, but his parents think otherwise. On the way to school with his mother, Gugulu gets separated from her and the book is about his adventures in the forest and all the creatures he meets before reuniting with his parents.

The book is listed as Juvenile Fiction, which is appropriate and I feel that a 4-6 year old would enjoy it immensely. The story line will keep the reader involved as also engage their imagination. The book is set in the forest so it is a nice escape from an urban landscape and introduces the young reader to the abundant variety of animals in the wild. The messaging is subtle without being pedantic. While eventually Gugulu is able to rescue himself from the situation, he does realize the value of caution and trusting his parents' judgment.

The "Meet the Star Cast" in the end where all the animals featured in the book are introduced in a brief manner is a nice touch and will encourage young readers to find out more about them.

The one thing that I wish was better executed were the illustrations. These are computer generated and appeared flat in a few places. ( )

Young sloth bear Gugulu goes against his parents and tries to head to school on his own. But when he’s faced with the dangers of the Indian forest, can he courageously find his way home? Gugulu embarks on an unexpected adventure — and learns an important lesson — in this adorably illustrated picture book!

This story serves as a good lesson to show them that it is better to stay with their parents until it is safe. I think this is a lovely story accompanied by beautiful illustrations by Akansha Krishnan.

Gugulu’s daring nature will engage young readers and make them curious about just what he might do next.
