The texts themselves are priceless, but the translations in this volume are seriously dated and often obscure the meaning of the Greek - especially worthy of disdain are the Aristophanes translations by Rogers, who transposes bawdy Greek comedy into impenetrable and euphemistic (or censored) Victorian rhyming verse. Of all the plays in this volume, Sophocles is the most readable. If plays are best seen rather than read, Classic Greek plays are even more so. ( )
