Great book with a sad ending. Darker than "Shadow of the Wind" and "Angel's Game". This book has all the usual props of Zafon's novels : Streets of Barcelona, old graveyard, tenacious policeman, mysterious someone with a long coat, abandoned house, books, heartbroken lovers. They together result in a unique brew that keeps you awake all night and leaves you with a heartache upon completion. Dark as it can get!!! ( )

I listened to this audio book (in English) six months ago, another lifetime for me in terms of how my life is. And I still think about it. Zafon is a master.

English Edition Review: (4.5/5)

I recently read the English version of Marina after having obsessed over the Spanish edition for so long. The translator did a great job of showcasing the scenery and the children's interactions with the world around them, which allows me to further see the beauty of novels like these. I will say, the Spanish edition hit me harder emotionally, but both editions are very much worth the read! ( )

Spanish Edition Review: (5/5)

This book is one of my all-time favorites. Not only does it have the beautiful scenery descriptions of a classic gothic novel, it also shows the beauty of friendship and grief through the lens of a child.

I first read the Spanish edition in one of my university classes, and we were able to have several deep discussions on it, not only surrounding guesses on what will happen next, but on the character's actions and how they relate to one another. It is a book that lives rent free in my head all the time, and it deserves its place there. ( )

Book description
In May 1980, fifteen-year-old Oscar Drai suddenly vanishes from his boarding school in Barcelona. For seven days and seven nights no one knows his whereabouts.

His story begins in an old quarter of the city, where he meets the strange Marina and her father, German Blau, a portrait painter. Marina takes Oscar to a cemetery to watch a macabre ritual that occurs on the last Sunday of each month. At exactly ten o'clock in the morning, a coach pulled by black horses appears. From it descends a woman, her face shrouded by a black velvet cloak. Holding a single rose, she walks to a gravestone that bears no name, only the mysterious emblem of a black butterfly with open wings.

When Oscar and Marina decide to follow her, they begin a journey that transports them to a forgotten, postwar Barcelona - a world of aristocrats and actresses, inventors and tycoons - and reveals a dark secret that lies waiting in the mysterious labyrinth beneath the city streets.
