wicked little stories indeed! and short. quick read, couldn't put it down. some stories were very surprising (scarily so) and some just made me guffaw out loud because i didn't see it coming. some are typical witch stories: old crone w/wart and hooked nose; some witches are less apparent. great, super ( )

In a mix of urban fantasy and horror these are short shorts with an average of 6 pages per story some are longer and some are shorter. They're a good mix and I enjoyed most of them. ( )

Book description
What is it about witches that makes them so fascinating and so frightening at once? According to editor Stefan Dziemianowicz it is their dual nature. Their ability to cast spells, conjure the infernal, and traffic with the unholy ranks them among the most formidable and fearsome agents of the supernatural world. And yet, witches also have a fundamentally human side, which sets them apart from their weird brethren of ghosts, vampires, and werewolves. For all their remarkable powers, witch are as accessible as a next-door neighbor, and sometimes as vulnerable.
Readers will find the witches who populate this volume's pages as fascinating and frightening as ever. Best of all, in the stories collected here there are all kinds of witches to encounter: good witches, bad witches, practitioners of white witchcraft, and devotees of black magic. The majority are female, some are male, and a few are completely unclassifiable within traditional gender and biological categories. Several were born witches, while many chose the witch's life. A few mix simple love potions, while others turn their culinary skills to mixing more volatile concoctions that have the ability to threaten all we hold dear. Some of the witches portrayed resent not getting the treatment they feel they deserve from those lesser powers, while others are not even aware that they have any special influence at all. Some, like many of their human counterparts, are outcasts. Some can't be taken too seriously; others shouldn't be crossed.

But have no fear: The magic at work in these 100 tales is potent enough to entertain the least superstitions of readers!

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 076070208X, Paperback)

The witches who populate these 100 delightfully scary stories include practitioners of white witchcraft and devotees of black magic. Most are female, some are male, and a few are thoroughly unclassifiable. They can be born witches or made witches, and may mix simple love potions or volatile concoctions that threaten all we hold dear. Some resent not receiving the treatment they feel they deserve from lesser mortals; yet other witches don't even realize that they wield any special influence at all. The many writers who take on this ever-fascinating character (so fundamentally human unlike her more paranormal, ghostly brethren) include Juleen Brantingham ("Burning in the Light"), Joe R. Landsdale ("By the Hair of the Head"), Simon McCaffery ("Blood Mary"), Terry Campbell ("Retrocurses"), Lawrence Shimel ("Coming Out of the Broom Closet"), and a coven of others.
