Welcome to the brutal and elite world of Basgiath War College, where everyone has an agenda, and every night could be your last . . . Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general - also known as her tough-as-talons mother - has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you're smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away . . . because dragons don't bond to 'fragile' humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother's daughter - like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. She'll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise. Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret. Alliances will be forged. Lives will be lost. Traitors will become allies . . . or even lovers. But sleep with one eye open because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.… (more)

  4. 21
    Divergent by Veronica Roth (Caramellunacy)
Caramellunacy: Divergent has a similar dangerous/reckless emphasis on courage and fighting (and thinking outside the box) as Fourth Wing and a similar frowned-upon love story with a damaged young man in leadership and a new recruit.

    Fireborne by Rosaria Munda (humouress)
humouress: Young adults, a generation after a rebellion, in a military college learning to ride dragons and preparing to fight a war against other countries with flying mounts of war. Like the book, but audio version is awful due to the narrators. Both voices, of the woman and man, are really bad and the intonation is often vulgar. ( )

Beginning was great, ending was great, the middle got a little cheesy with the main character’s insta-love. Not sure this deserves the all hype it gets, but it was good. The world building & lore on dragons was interesting. ( )

Ok first off. I love the enemies to lovers pipeline and how it slow burns. I didn't expect any of the spice scene at all, and I didn't have my poker face ready for public reading.. However we made it through and I really enjoyed the book. ( )

Fourth Wing was a mixed bag for me. The plot, while not original, was very well executed and the pacing was good. The characters were well drawn and the protagonist had a strong character arc. The fantasy world building was just so-so, and I was left with a lot of unanswered questions about how the world worked as well as the historical and political underpinnings of the story. The writing was not great. The dialog was good, but the rest was choppy and the descriptive prose wasn’t effective. The thing that really turned me off was the melodrama. I admit that I don’t care much for romance novels, and usually it is a melodramatic narrative that makes me dislike them. Although I am not prudish about sex scenes, these scenes in Fourth Wing could more accurately be called erotica or soft porn, and they were drawn out to the point that they were boring. So overall, the book was a nice distraction, but it had little impact. ( )

To Aaron.

My own Captain America.

Through the deployments, the moves,

the sunniest highs, and the darkest lows,

it's always been you and me, kiddo.

Here's to the artists.

You hold the power to shape the world.

The following text has been faithfully transcribed from Navarrian into the modern language by Jesinia Neilwart, Curator of the Scribe Quadrant at Basgiath War College.
Conscription Day is always the deadliest. Maybe that's why the sunrise is especially beautiful this morning - because I know it might be my last. -Chapter One
