The title essay in this collection was the first Caroline M. Hewins Lecture, read at the 40th Anniversary Meeting of the Round Table of Children's Librarians of New England at Swampscott, Mass., Oct. 18, 1947. Six of the other essays have appeared in The Horn Book Magazine.
