Science Fiction. Science Fiction & Fantasy. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ? The third book in an epic series about a girl who will travel beyond the stars to save the world she loves from destruction from the author of the Reckoners series, the Mistborn trilogy, and the Stormlight Archive.
Spensa??s life as a Defiant Defense Force pilot has been far from ordinary. She proved herself one of the best starfighters in the human enclave of Detritus and she saved her people from extermination at the hands of the Krell??the enigmatic alien species that has been holding them captive for decades. What??s more, she traveled light-years from home as an undercover spy to infiltrate the Superiority, where she learned of the galaxy beyond her small, desolate planet home.

Now, the Superiority??the governing galactic alliance bent on dominating all human life??has started a galaxy-wide war. And Spensa??s seen the weapons they plan to use to end it: the Delvers. Ancient, mysterious alien forces that can wipe out entire planetary systems in an instant. Spensa knows that no matter how many pilots the DDF has, there is no defeating this predator.

Except that Spensa is Cytonic. She faced down a Delver and saw something eerily familiar about it. And maybe, if she??s able to figure out what she is, she could be more than just another pilot in this unfolding war. She could save the galaxy.

The only way she can discover what she really is, though, is to leave behind all she knows and enter the Nowhere. A place from which few ever return.

Defiant is the third book in the Skyward quartet, although additional novellas and forthcoming novels take place in the same universe. At the end of book 2, Spensa jumped through a portal into the nowhere, so almost all of book 3 takes place in the nowhere. Due to Spensa's distance from her friends, like book 2, Cytonic introduces a new cast of secondary characters. The series is overall well written, with compelling characters and engaging plot.

This book felt a bit meander-y, which was probably partly by design. I'm glad I don't have to wait to read the next one. ( )

Scud! That was fun. It's a slower moving plot than the first two books. Plenty of adventure and exploration of the nowhere. Spensa's character really grows in this one. Now the long wait for the final book. ( )

So far this one is my least favorite books of the series. That being said,I enjoyed it a lot. Loved the character development and the world building. I really missed some of the characters from other books. And there were a couple of plot developments that felt just a bit too deux ex-machina for me (it is a yound adult book after all) and that really is the extent of my complaint. All in all,an easy, enjoyable read. ( )

Holy goodness was this book a wild ride. I’m still not sure I understand everything that happened. Actually a lot of it is over my head, but it was so good. Tons of character development in this one for my favorite Spensa. ❤️ ( )
