USA, det vilde vesten, ca 1890
En omrejsende trup af skuespillere opfører stykket, Den hvide kavaler. Lucky Luke støder på dem på vej til Nothing Gulch og får en fribillet. Blandt publikum er også Hank Wallys, som Lucky Luke afleverer 10000 dollars til som betaling for en kvæghjord. Under forestillingen bliver banken plyndret og Hanks penge er væk. Lucky Luke mistænker nogen i teatertruppen for kuppet. Truppen består af direktør Whittaker Baltimore, Gladys Whimple, Barnaby Float og Francis Lusty, men hvem af dem er skurken? Luke følger efter truppen til Miner's Pass, hvor det hele gentager sig, men denne gang falder mistanken på Lucky Luke og han er lige ved at blive hængt. Han taber truppen af sporet, men takket være en indianerhøvding med sans for kultur finder han dem igen i Indian Flats. Han afregner kontant med Whittaker, der får et blåt øje. Derfor er denne forhindret i at spille rollen som Den Hvide Kavaler og Lucky Luke bliver overtalt til at dublere. Han får lampefeber, men klarer den alligevel. Også banken i Indian Flats bliver røvet og både Luke og teatertruppen iler hastigt videre. Luke gennemsøger truppens remedier, men uden at finde noget bytte. Har han taget fejl?
I Tumbleweed Springs bliver Luke fuppet. Nogen råber "Banken er røvet", men det er den slet ikke. Til gengæld forsvinder kasinoets kasse imens folk er henne ved banken. Luke bliver igen mistænkt og fængslet, men redder sig ved at snyde i russisk roulette. Han tager tilbage til Nothing Gulch og aflægger med dyster mine rapport til Hank. Pengene er væk.
De går på saloon for at drukne sorgen, men her støder de på Gladys. Hun har forladt truppen efter at have opdaget hvad der foregår og fortæller Luke alt, inklusive bandens nuværende opholdssted. Han dukker op næsten som Den Hvide Kavaler ville have gjort og efter et pudsigt optrin, hvor Jolly Jumper uskadeliggør bandens leder, Francis Lusty, drager de af mod nærmeste sherifkontor. En enkelt afstikker til Hanks med hans penge er der dog tid til. I fængslet genopfører de Den Hvide Kavaler, men her buh'er publikum af helten og hepper på skurken.

Glimrende og veloplagt fortalt historie med en masse småvariationer over kendt tema. ( )
