CranioSacral Therapy and SomatoEmotional Release.

What began as an unceplained phenomenon during a surgery in the early '70s became the basis for what is fast becoming one of the world's leading natural therapies-and a ray of hope for patients everywhere searching for relief. It's called CranioSacral Therapy, a name coined by John E. Upledger, D.O., O.M.M., after he observed a little-known body system and began looking for answers.

In Your Inner Physicain and You, Dr. Upledger recounts his personal experiences exploring and developing this gentle technique that enhances the craniosacral system, the area in which the brain and spinal cord function.

Using a light touch generally no greater than the weight of a nickel, practitioners today use CranioSacral Therapy to improve the functioning of the central nervous system, eliminate the negative effects of stress, strengthen resistance to disease, and enhance overall health.

The results? You'll read about some of them here-from folks like a two-time Olympic bronze medalist whose vertigo threatened to cut short her platform-diving career, to a young boiy who simply wanted to walk.

You'll also explore an innovative therapy coalled Somato-Emotional Release. It helps rid the mind and body of the residual effects of trauma and negative emotional experiences.

Join Dr. Upledger on this fascinating journey to good health.

Dr. John E. Upledger is President of The Upledger Institute, Inc. Dedicated to the natural enhancement of health, the Institute is recognized worldwide for its groundbreaking continuing-education programs, clinical research and therapeutic services. He is the author of CranioSacral Therapy; CranioSacral Therapy II - Beyond The Dura; SomatoEmotional Release and Beyond; Your Inner Physician and You; A Brain is Born; and CranioSacral Therapy, Touchstone for Natural Healing.

This is a captivating book if you can handle some new ideas. Upledger's system of craniosacral therapy is based on his accidental discovery that the pressure of the cranial and spinal fluid fluctuates in a regular rhythm. This cyclical change occurs at a rate of 4 to 10 times a minute, producing what he calls a cranial wave or pulse.
If your mind is handicapped by preconceptions instilled by our hidebound system of medical education in this country, you won't have any patience with this idea and you won't want to read this book. But I would encourage you to suspend your disbelief and give Upledger a fair hearing. His book is a fascinating report of his success in treating people that other practitioners have given up on. The book is entertaining and full of surprises, because the man writes without affectation and because he's simply an interesting fellow who has had an interesting life.
You may want to hold off on your own final judgment of some of Upledger's ideas but I definitely am giving him the benefit of the doubt. This is because I've had the good fortune to have been introduced to craniosacral therapy in massage school and again in one of the Upledger seminars. Under the guidance of someone who knows what they're doing, you can learn to feel the cranial wave and to manipulate the cranial bones. These bones do move, but the movement is very slight and you have to be infinitely patient and have some peace in your soul to be able to tune in to them. It's an overwhelming, awe-inspiring experience when you finally do.
One day Upledger will be recognized as one of the pioneers of medicine and the people of that day will wonder why it took us so long to catch on.-Clair Davies

Leaves much to be desired, once you get to know more about this specialty (craniosacral therapy). Upledger very vainly & very wrongly claims to have discovered !!! this whole field. Not True. However, what is there is interesting. ( )
