Scholarly, readable and ultimately sobering, as the best historical writing often is. My late grandfather was a participant in that war and had left a daily diary (since lost in a fire) of his military service in that war which changed Greek history for ever (the Catastrophe, as it is known in Greece). Modern Turkey emerged from the momentous, bloody and cruel events of this period. ( )
