The two young girls stumble upon a terrible murder scene, and their testimony helps put a Jewish man in Louisiana's Angola prison for 25 years. Pressures of the trial and conflict in the Christian and Jewish communities end the friendship between the two girls. When the man they helped send to prison is released, people start to die. The two young women must reunite and combine forces to stay alive. What drew me to this book-I read another one of Athol Dickson's books, River Rising. Dickson's theme of the need for unity between different faiths draws me in and makes reading his novels a more complex experience. I tried my first Dickson novel after seeing a poster listing 2006 Christy Awards. no reviews | add a review

Little Katie was a Christian. Her very best friend Ruth was a Jew. The girls’ eyewitness testimony sent a bad man to Louisiana's infamous Angola prison. 25 years later, Ruth has become an embittered Rabbi, Kate is a lonely widow, the bad man is out, and people are dying in the strangest of ways. Torn apart in childhood by animosities beyond their understanding, Kate and Ruth can no longer elude the past’s unfinished business. To survive, these very different women must reach out to each other in spite of the mayhem and mistrust that shrouds one vital truth: sometimes the most dangerous of enemies crouches just inside the human heart.
