First words
For most people Charles Wesley is only a hymnwriter.  They regard his brother John as being the sole founder of Methodism and he most eminent of all eighteenth-century Protestants.  John's constant preaching around the country over half a century has become the stuff of legends, especially in the years when he faced tough opposition from mobs. Historians have viewed his perseverance and strength of will, which brooked no opposition, as critically important in providing the religious discipline necessary to shape the turbulence generated by religious fervour.  As a consequence there has been a never-ending succession of books about John Wesley and his contribution not only to religion but also to the very nature of British society.  Yet increasingly modern research has shown that John was not the single-handed shaper of Methodism that his writings of early historians proclaimed.  There were many other people, both clerical and lay, who played a vital role in the creation of Methodism and who have been largely ignored.  Among the many other creators of Methodism there were certainly two who played just as important a role as John. They were George Whitefield and Charles Wesley.
