Naples, FL 2023 #3 - Another roller-coaster ride with these teen sleuths......and once again a collision of what i am living and experiencing colliding with a 'random' book i choose to read! I always try to read a Hardy Boys book on vacation....this was next in line and packed and shipped it weeks ago. The day prior to reading this, I was fortunate to visit the Edison/Ford estates in Fort Myers, FL, and was schooled extensively in Edison's long-term quest for a domestic source of rubber. And what do you think our eccentric scientist outside of Bayport was secretly working on when he engaged the Hardy Boys help in 'The Flickering Torch Mystery' the very next day???? I'll bet you have guessed. ( ) I love the paralells that I find in these books. The boys get involved in hunting down missing silk worms from an government experimental farm. This also leads to a smuggling ring on Barmet Bay (don't criminals EVER learn?). 'The Flickering Torch' came out in 1944, and in the previous year's Nancy Drew title, 'The Secret in the Old Attic' there is much ado about the industrial applications of spider silk. Someone, somewhere must have read every Stratemeyer Syndicate book of a year - especially during the war when they were short-staffed - and found all of the connections. The book isn't bad. At least the plot hanfs together. It gains most of its points, however, from an excess of Aunt Gertrude meddling in everyone's business. We're entering a Golden Age of Gertrude. The revision of 1971 involves suspicious plane crashes and a dance club called the Flickering Torch. Hardy Boys Next: 'The Melted Coins' Previous: 'The Clue of the Broken Blade' Two pilots die in a mysterious crash. The Hardy Boys are asked by there father to help figure out why the pilots died. The Boys pull in all of their friends to help solve the mystery. Some of the chapter headings give away what to expect but the author throws a twist here and there to keep you hooked to the end. no reviews | add a review
