I saved up for this in the early days of my Dylan mania, never imagining a Nobel Prize in his future. This was well before you could look up the lyrics to any song on the internet, and none of his albums included the lyrics, so I spent hours and hours poring over these. It also includes his drawings, which are interesting, but mostly forgettable. ( )

It i hard to "read" these without hearing that voice behind the words. My edition is 1973, so this is a very incomplete record of his work, but good as far as it goes. It has some work that was unpublished back then, but most of it has been released since.

Whitman he ain't, but Dylan he is, and reading his stuff will give you a greater appreciation of what it means for Bob to be Bob. ( )

a serendipitous find - I owned this book long ago and my husband gave it to a charity shop when we moved; I always regretted it. Today I found it by chance in my local second-hand bookstore when I was looking for something else. ( )

Epigraph
If I cant please everybody
I might as well not please nobody at all
(theirs but so many people
An I just cant please them all)
Dedication
Dedicated to the rough riders, ghost poets,
low-down rounders, sweet lovers,
desperate characters,
sad-eyed drifters and rainbow angels - those high
on life from all ends of
the wild blue yonder
And especially to the girls upstairs - Cathy
Miriam, Mildred & Naomi who put this
heavy volume together.
To the magnificent Woodie Guthrie and Robert Johnson
who sparked it off
   |  and to the great wondrous melodious spirit
which covereth the oneness of us all
And to Sara wo made it all complete
