Fiction. HTML:

A man climbs over the railings and plunges into Niagara Falls. A newlywed, he has left behind his wife, Ariah Erskine, in the honeymoon suite the morning after their wedding. "The Widow Bride of The Falls", as Ariah comes to be known, begins a relentless, seven day vigil in the mist, waiting for his body to be found. At her side throughout, confirmed bachelor and pillar of the community Dirk Burnaby is unexpectedly transfixed by the otherworldly gaze of this plain, strange woman, falling in love with her though they barely exchange a word. What follows is their passionate love affair, marriage, children, and a seemingly perfect existence.

But the tragedy by which their life together began shadows them, damaging their idyll with distrust, greed, and even murder. What unfurls is a drama of parents and their children; of secrets and sins; of lawsuits, murder, and eventually redemption.

I can't remember much about this book, after all the years since I read it. ( )

I could not get into this book. I read the first 100 pages or so, and had to put it down. I didn't like ANY of the characters, and, after talking with friends who had finished it and told me the characters don't get any better, I decided not to torture myself any more. Life is too short.

I loved this book. It captures the experience of being a sheltered woman before and during second wave feminism so well. Ariah strongly reminded me of one of my aunts and she's heartbreaking, especially when seen through the lense of her grown and nearly grown children.

I also have to admit that I love reading books set in upstate New York. It feels like home. ( )

Yes, it's a bit overwrought. I suspect Joyce Carol Oates of writing overwrought grocery lists. Nonetheless, it's one of her better more recent efforts and I did enjoy it quite a bit. ( )

rabck from HI77; TLC book club book from a few years ago. Book had a really good start. The day after her wedding, Ariah's husband commits suicide at Niagara Falls, just a short distance from the hotel where they were staying. The hotel manager's friend is Dirk Burnaby, and that's how Dirk gets to know Ariah, eventually marrying her in a quick wedding, causing her famly to disown her. The book twists and turns through their lives, although it could have gone into a lot more background work with Dirk. Then Dirk takes on a Love Canal law case...and the book runs out of steam. Dirk is killed, Ariah becomes odder - definitely not likeable at all, then the story spins with some of her kids...just really disconnected writing at that point. I think it could have been much better if Dirk had a different case - not Love Canal. ( )
