(2007)Seems to be the last of the Camel Club as Oliver Stone pursues the crooked AG. Booklist Review*Starred Review* It's difficult to decide how seriously to take a thriller about a conspiracy theorist named Oliver Stone. Baldacci does make an oblique reference to the fact that his protagonist shares the name of a noted conspiracy-minded film director, so we know it's no accident. But does this mean that the Camel Club novels (The Camel Club, 2005; The Collectors, 2006; and now this one) have taken a lighthearted turn, or is Baldacci just having a quick bit of insider fun before cranking into narrative overdrive? The latter, definitely. Annabelle Conroy, con artist extraordinaire, might have bitten off more than she can chew: she's bilked a casino owner (the wonderfully named, scenery-chewing Jerry Bagger) out of $40 million, and he isn't taking it well. Now Annabelle and her cohorts are on the run from Bagger's murderous rage. Oliver and his band of associates circle the wagons to protect Annabelle, but Oliver's having a tough time concentrating, as someone is killing off his old friends and colleagues, and it looks like Stone's name is now at the top of the hit list. When Baldacci is on fire, nobody can touch him, and this is an exhilarating thriller: fast paced, with a cast of engaging characters, a couple of mind-wrenching plot twists, and a general air of derring-do that keeps the proceedings from getting too heavy. Let's hope this isn't Oliver Stone's last appearance. Pitt, David.

FROM AMAZON: Oliver Stone and the Camel Club are back in their most dangerous adventure yet, a war on two fronts.

Casino king Jerry Bagger from The Collectors is hunting Annabelle Conroy, who conned him out of millions. Stone and his colleagues Reuben, Milton, and Caleb marshal all their resources to protect Annabelle. Yet all their skills may not be enough when a deadly new opponent rips off the veneer of Stone's own mysterious past.

Bagger's menace pales next to newcomer Harry Finn's lethality. Seeming a normal family man, Finn has already killed three men, with more targets to come. When Finn also sets his bull's-eye on Stone, his reason why will be the greatest shock of all, making listeners reconsider their beliefs in good and evil.

As bodies and institutions topple, the story rockets toward a shattering finale that will leave the survivors of this explosive tale changed forever.

This is the second time I've tried to resume the Camel Club series, which I enjoyed well enough years ago. Given that I also tried and failed to pick up on the King & Maxwell series, I think my tastes have changed. I am really disliking Baldacci's writing style. #abandoned ( )

Stone Cold is another excellent Camel Club story. The story is a thriller from the beginning to the end. The only bad part is that it ends literally with Oliver Stone, the main character, flying through the air heading towards the ocean. Stone Cold is a great book about spies. Four stars were awarded to the book in this review. This book is highly recommended. ( )
