The first year university history text when I was there. It does begin with the Renaissance and moves along to the end of WWII, or at least that edition did.A first book, All in all, a reasonable treatment of the material. The maps are adequate, and there is a glowing portrait of the USA compared to the other movers and shakers. ( )

This was the textbook for the AP European history class I took in high school. The title is a misnomer—Palmer and Cotton's book is a history of modern Europe and the rest of the world only isasmuch as it was conquered by Europeans. That solecism aside, this is a fine survey of western history. ( )
