Fiction. Literature. Western. HTML:Now an Academy Award-winning Netflix film by Jane Campion, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst: Thomas Savage's acclaimed Western is "a pitch-perfect evocation of time and place" (Boston Globe) for fans of East of Eden and Brokeback Mountain.
Set in the wide-open spaces of the American West, The Power of the Dog is a stunning story of domestic tyranny, brutal masculinity, and thrilling defiance from one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in American literature. The novel tells the story of two brothers â?? one magnetic but cruel, the other gentle and quiet â?? and of the mother and son whose arrival on the brothersâ?? ranch shatters an already tenuous peace. From the novelâ??s startling first paragraph to its very last word, Thomas Savageâ??s voice â?? and the intense passion of his characters â?? holds readers in thrall.

This is five stars all the way. Written in 1967, "The Power of the Dog" is an overlooked classic. A western in the best sense. ( )

This 1967 book was a very good read. I do hope they do justice to the book with the newly released film.
Book first, then film.

A masterpiece by any measure.

On my favorites list.....Phil is one of the most unlikeable characters I've ever read (played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the movie), George is his polar opposite and they are brothers. The story hints that there is a reason for Phil's cruelty, but that is up to the reader to decide. Highly recommend....the book can be slow and seemingly meandering, but there is always a point, so don't give up...it's perfect. The Vintage edition has an essay at the end by Annie Proulx...don't skip it, she makes the connection between Savage's life and his work ( )
