This started off as a very interesting look into the mind of a notorious man, but I think perhaps the evidence needed for this book was a little lacking. The first half of the book builds up William Quantrill in an effort to understand the type of man he was and how he reacts to situations. However, the second half of the book dedicated to his connection to the Confederate army became a much drier description of a military engagement and less about William Quantrill. In fact in the last 2-3 chapters of the book, Quantrill is a secondary character at best, involved in very little of the action. In many ways it seems like there was a lack of evidence to finish up the story that this book sets up to describe. ( )
