My favorite in the series by a decent margin, and an interesting turning point in humor and compassion with racism, sexism, and all manner else in play. The first book - MASH - is somewhat more cleanly written, but this one has a seriously wonderful spirit to it. ( ) The wacky adventures of MASH became way way wackier. Hawkeye returns to Maine after being in Korea for 18 months, and somehow is able to convience the rest of his crew, including an out of work Duke Forester, to move to Maine too. Duke, Hawkeye and Peicre are able to make enough monty betting with some locals that they can keep aitens alive to open their won combination Fishmarket and Clinic. Spearchucker Jones is thrown in a few chapter, mainly to get some laughs at racial stereo types. Apparently their small town fish finding piolot Wrong Way happens to moon light as a Interncontinetal piolot, and Trapper John and his new fiance/nurse/receptionshit entertain the crew by having intercourse in the cranberry blog. While some of the funniest parts are related to the secret democrats who can't let it be none who they voted for or else they could get shot, and once it does come up someone actually does get shot. The first one was better, but if you like quick, zany, unbelievable, stories give Mash Goes to Maine a try. Good book. There are really two entirely different kinds of books in the MASH series - MASH itself, Maine, and Mania which was written much later are by Richard Hooker by himself and are the weird and wonderful adventures of some doctors. All the rest, with William Butterworth's name on them, are just wacky stories. MASH Goes to San Francisco, and MASH Goes to New Orleans, have a couple short scenes in them where the doctors get to be doctors...but the rest of the time and all of the rest of the books, they're only doctors for the purpose of loudly discussing the details of operations and emptying restaurants. And golf nuts, and... I do enjoy the wacky MASH books, but it's on an entirely different level from the first two books. The wacky ones are pure and unadulterated fluff, the first two and last one are weird but have a lot of solid personhood(?) in them. I cried at two points reading MASH Goes to Maine - the same two points where I always cry (Song of the Moose and Laurie. Oh, and Doggy. And the Finch-Browns - when the new kid gets adopted by the Moores. And...Yeah. Good book.). no reviews | add a review
