The moving story of a man, drawn back into his past by an illness that robs him of his sense of the present. Konrad Lang, a man in his sixties, is hunted by images of his early childhood, while he forgets his immediate past. The fading gentleman is pulled back towards the villa of his adoptive family, the Kochs. Konrad grew up with Thomas Koch, the rich and spoiled heir to the family's fortune. He was Thomas's playmate and increasingly became the family's whipping-boy and now the Kochs don't want to know. Except for Elvira Senn, the all-powerful matriarch, who becomes increasingly worried by Konrad's flashbacks. Simone, the newcomer to the family, takes pity on Konrad and threatens to uncover secrets the family would like to see hidden forever.… (more)

Good enough. Too much focus on the dementia part for my taste, very little on the mystery and it ends up having very little crime, too. Not one of the better Suter books. ( )

A solid, well written story about the secrets that had been kept hidden within a family over generations. Perhaps its strongest point is the account it gives of the onset of Alzheimer's disease on an elderly man causing him to forget the recent, and remember what others wished to keep buried. ( )

This fast-paced 248-page mystery was published in 2001. Translated from the German by Sandra Harper, Small World features Koch family friend and ne’er do well, Konrad Lang, who starts off the book by burning down the Koch family villa in Corfu. Reminiscent of a Thomas Mann novel, in terms of family dynamics and the lifestyles of the rich but not really famous, SmallWorld’s mysteries are revealed as Konrad’s life unravels. Konrad has developed a bad case of Alzheimer’s disease, and unfortunately for the Koch family, the early memories Konrad is beginning to access are those they would rather keep secret. ( )
