Dit is het beste boek dat ik sinds tijden HERlezen heb. Het verhaal begint op de avond dat de moeder van de ik-persoon (Esther) sterft. Daarna gaat het terug in de tijd, tot het weer de avond wordt van het sterven van haar moeder. Vervolgens gaat het verhaal verder, om te eindigen met het verhaal over wat er werkelijk gebeurde op de avond dat haar moeder stierf.
Het knappe aan deze roman is dat één personage met je aangesproken wordt; het joodse meisje dat Esthers moeder in de oorlog beschermd en verzorgd heeft.
Er komen heftige onderwerpen aan de orde die echt binnenkomen bij mij als lezer. Jaloersmakend knap geschreven.

En dan te bedenken dat ik dit boek op mijn 15e voor het eerst las! ( )
