I wanted FR-like, D&D-like stories for my young ones, but these are too monster/npc-of-the-week for me. ( )

I like the part where Tom and Elenna and the snow explorers were trapped in camp by snow tigers that Nanook was supposed to be keeping away. ( )

In the fifth instalment of the Beast Quest series, Tom and Elenna travel to the ice plains to release Tartok the ice beast from the control of the evil wizard Malvel. Tom and Elenna must work with a clan living in the ice plains and overcome life or death challenges in order to complete their mission. This fantasy novel efficiently constructs Tom and Elenna’s world in a believable way. The series is contextualized in an introduction that orients the reader to notable past events. The text and content of this book is intended for more experienced readers as they transition to full length chapter books. This book demonstrates more advanced reading elements such as longer chapters and complex vocabulary. Additionally, there are only a few drawn illustrations included in this book. The action packed and adventure in the narrative will appeal to many boy readers. However, the storyline includes some dark themes such as death and persistent danger that may be inappropriate for young readers with a high reading level. This book is recommended as an additional purchase for and advanced transitional chapter book. (Ages 8-11) ( )
