Being one of the earlier appreciations of nineteenth century English studio painting, with the emphasis on what the author insists on referring to as "late pre-Raphaelitism"; the tenuous connection of Ned Burne-Jones with that group being stretched to, perhaps beyond, its breaking point with her inclusion of neo-Classicists such as Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Frederic Leighton. Unfortunately, the book was published a decade before art book production broke out of its fifty-year pattern of a handful of color plates swimming in an ocean of black-and-white, so after two generations of books celebrating a type of art which has grown much more popular during the period, there is little which is impressive or unique about the reproductions. The author does do a fine job of outlining late Victorian art, however, particularly since her effort was a fairly early on in the renascence of interest in the school, which had been despised or forgotten for a half-century or more.
