Vanessa Barton steps onto Bennett's Island for the first time as if she is stepping into a prison cell. She feels trapped by her marriage, she carries the emotional shackles of a childhood spent as a ward of the state, and she wants nothing to do with the island community. A chance encounter with Owen Bennett sparks off an attraction that brings Vanessa to life, as she discovers something real that eclipses the fantasies of the novels she reads. Owen leads her on a path of self-discovery that forces her to confront long buried feelings and begin healing old emotional scars. Island life shakes Vanessa out of her self-pity but when misfortune knocks once again at her door, she must decide once and for all whether to succumb to the fugue of her earlier days or whether to seize her independence and happiness.… (more)

After finding one of her novels exceeding disappointing, I took a break from Ogilvie. This one reminded me of how great a regional novelist she can be. She eases you through a story, telling so much through detail. This books are a treasure trove of a Maine that no longer exists. And Rosa's story is pretty compelling, too. ( )

This one left me a little perplexed....the island life quotient was fully present and accounted for, but the story line did not mesh properly with me......not to be a spoiler, but what i kept hoping to happen really did not happen, which is unusual for Ogilivie....i know, i know......predictable and formulated is the norm, but this one strayed in my opinion. Some unsettling situations that i thought would ultimately resolve 'appropriately' did not.....but the island part is still awesome to me.....i can't help it.......it's just the way i'm built. I believe this is the second of a whole slew of Bennett's Island second series, so this may be just a necessary bump in the road for what is yet to come......and never fear, I shall continue to share!! The Seasons Hereafter by Elizabeth Ogilvie
Bennett's island book 2 of the lovers trilogy follows the life of Vanessa Barton when she goes to live on the island with her lobsterman husband.
Like hearing of the offisland adventures.
Love the detailed descriptions of the walks she takes on the shore, I feel I am right there.
Knitting trapheads, this is priceless! Tragedy happens on the island and they band together.
She likes Owen and he's married but she agrees to knit traps for him for pay and he supplies her with the cone of material and instructions.
Van loves to read books and that gains her access to the other woman's houses to exchange books at any time.
Hate how she gives her all and it slams her in the face, leaving her devastated. Was cool to hear of the fire and how they combat it. ( )
