For one, I like the layout and writing of this story. I think that the story flows nicely when describing the different surprises the mother receives on Mother’s Day. In the story, the different children surprise their mother with a little part of her gift. By the end of the story, the children had given her different items that made her start “to feel like a queen.” Also, I liked the illustrations in this story because they fit the mood of the story. Some of the pages had notes and captions drawn on it. The notes were of different surprises each child gave the mother and the captions were written above different characters’ heads. I think the notes and captions added suspense to the different clues and surprises the children had for the mother. I think these illustrations would be beneficial for the younger students because captions can be more entertaining to read than words in the text. I also liked the plot of the story. I think that the suspense of the different surprises and the cheerful mood of the story would be engaging for a student to read. I also think that some students would be able to relate to the plot and the different actions the characters take part in during the celebration of Mother’s Day. The big idea of Happy Mother’s Day is that it is important to celebrate the people in your life. In the story, the children showed their appreciation for their mother by surprising her with different gifts and coming together as a family to have a nice dinner for her.
