Best single volume history of comics I've run across. My edition is from 1967, so it is not up to date, but it has invaluable info on the past, with a focus on British comics, and lots of artwork. ( )

A well-meaning, but too thinly spread-thin reference and history of the comics: i.e., comic strips and books. The historical background is good as far as it goes, but the authors start with almost pre-history up to the present, and try to cover too much ground. The illustrations range from well-chosen and clear to small and smudged. A nice addition that covers some ground I haven't seen elsewhere, but there are much better-done comic historical references out there. ( )
