No current Talk conversations about this book. Great adventure story -- love the robots, the wonderful and creepy parts of the world so far, and the strong family bonds. The death of Emily and Navin's father was really upsetting, but does add a believable motivation for Emily's later choices. Nailbiter! Cliffhanger! Interested to see what happens next. ( ![]() darker than desired, lots of loose ends and mysteries, want to read sequel This book is a good read for older intermediate students or early middle school readers. It is a story about the new stonekeeper Emily and her little brother Navin who go on an adventure through a mythical world to save their mom. This would be a helpful book to inspire students to read who normally don't enjoy reading. This book is a little dark, considering it's an all ages comic. There's a car wreck, human-eating creatures, death. But there is also talking robots, a smart stuffed bunny, good vs. evil, and I liked the artwork. I will definitely pick up the rest of the series. The kids at my library LOVE this series. Although many of them pronounce it like an egg dish (omelet), and it took me awhile to figure out what they were asking for, I finally decided I needed to see what the fuss was about for myself, and read the first volume. Wow! Gorgeous artwork, compelling story line, cute fantastical creatures, and intense issues handled sensitively. Bravo, Kazu Kibuishi. I've already put holds on volumes two and three!
For all its flaws, this is a well-written book. It’s quick-paced and keeps your interest from the first page until the last. You don’t have to worry about young readers getting bored in the middle and not finishing the book.
"After the tragic death of their father, Emily and Navin move with their mother to the home of her deceased great-grandfather, but the strange house proves to be dangerous. Before long, a sinister creature lures the kids' mom through a door in the basement. Em and Navin, desperate not to lose her, follow her into an underground world inhabited by demons, robots, and talking animals. Eventually, they enlist the help of a small mechanical rabbit named Miskit. Together with Miskit, they face the most terrifying monster of all, and Em finally has the chance to save someone she loves" -- from publisher's web site. No library descriptions found. |
