Jenny Jeffer's kindness to a lost little boy at the mall nets her a sweet gig baby-sitting. The boy's adorable, his parents well-to-do and concerned, and it's a guaranteed twice-a-week paydays which would allow Jenny to help out her mom, who's been raising her alone. The only problem is that somebody keeps calling on the phone. Heavy breathing. Threats. Does it have anything to do with the well-publicized baby-sitter murders in the area?

'The Baby-Sitter' was a lot of fun. This may be one of the few books in the Stine canon actually written by the man, which is a little hard to believe considering how consistent Jenny's character is, as well as her mother and the rest of the supporting cast. Oh wait, I'm remembering the toxic new boyfriend who insists Jenny give him a chance and get over her legitimate feelings because it was so hard for him to approach her. This is genuine Stine all right.

I knew the series was going to have issues going into it, so I barely even register such problems anymore. This is a fun, solid thriller that keeps you guessing and, I have it on good authority, that there are two good sequels and a terrible finale to the series. I can't wait!

R.L. Stine played such a pivotal role in raising me that I want to defend him to the bitter end. And there was a little suspense in figuring out who the creepy caller could be in the days before Caller ID. But other than that, it was pretty rough. ( )

It is hard to put down. There are plenty of suspects. Just when you think you know who the caller is... ( )
