I picked this book up for its theme, the memoirs of Esther Tusquets, a Spanish writer from the Postwar period, of her childhood in a well-off Barcelona family of supporters of Franco. Tusquets, like many of the writers of the time, eventually turned to the left and protested Franco's goverment. This transformation is the subject of this book, in which Tusquets passes from the band of the conquerors to the conquered. Though not entirely impartial, Tusquets presents her story with criticism, but without remorse, leaving one with the the impression that, though they may be guilty of some reprehensible acts, her family (and herself) are not to be demonized. A quick read and a highly interesting portrait of the writer and the time period. ( )
