Zowel Paul Theroux als V.S. Naipaul zijn twee schrijvers waarvan ik een groot aantal boeken met veel plezier heb gelezen. Theroux is vooral bekend als schrijver van reisverhalen zoals "De grote spoorwegcaroussel ***", "De gelukkige eilanden ****" en "De zuilen van Hercules ****".
Eeen paar jaar terug heeft Theroux "De geschiedenis van een vriendschap****" gepubliceerd waarin hij zijn vriendschap met Naipaul heeft beschreven. In de jaren 60 was Theroux werkzaam in Oeganda waar hij Naipaul ontmoette die hem op weg hielp bij zijn eerste stappen als schrijver.
"V.S. Naipaul: an introduction to his work" is een dun boekje over de boeken die Naipaul destijds al had geschreven door zijn jongere collega. Het is een soort eerbetoon waarin Theroux schrijft waarom hij Naipaul zo'n bijzondere schrijver vindt. Het boekje is prettig leesbaar en wat het belangrijkste is, je hebt zin om na lezing de besproken boeken zelf te gaan lezen voorzover je dat nog niet gedaan hebt.
