Epigraph
Dedication
Jean Koefoed

1923–1996

This book is dedicated to the memory of Jean, who for more than the last half century was the guardian of the very best in graphic design. He inspired authors and designers to the highest levels and the subject of this book, being the basis of all good design, was very dear to his heart.

We mourn this humble man, whose name never appeared in the books that he conceived and loved so much, but we are fortunate to have worked with him on this, his last work.
