A short novel about a middle school boy dealing with the fear of being stalked by a school bully. At just 120 pages and taking place over the course of two days, this one is a vignette of how roller-coaster-like middle school can be, and how sometimes adults don't remember or understand how life-and-death those emotions and situations can seem. I’ve never had someone threaten to beat me up. It, then, was a revelation to read this book. And, isn’t Betsy Byars a master? I left the book feeling compassion for both our main character, nicknamed, unhappily, Mouse, and the bully, Hammerman. I saw both Mouse and Hammerman become bigger, better people. Fabulous. A 1001 CBYMRBYGU. ( )
