Well, it was fun. With only exception of last chapters, where it got little bit disappointing. All this easiness is not something I usually search in books. ( )

Gross and weird. I prefer not to think about parasites. ( )

I remember reading this book in high school and was obsessed. One of the best and most interesting takes on vampires, plus it taught me so much about parasites (roll with it, it is FASCINATING). ( )

This had such potential! I loved the setup, even though it was giving me major Strain vibes (granted, this came first). But unfortunately, it never built to anything major. There was great potential for tension and horror, but you could definitely tell that this book was purely setup for a bigger story. As far as I know, there's only one book after this one, so I'm not sure that the epic battle that is foretold in this book occurs in that one. I liked that this approached vampirism from a scientific/biological perspective. But I wanted to see more vampires doing scary vampire stuff. Instead, they were just hanging out in sewers and eating pigeons. Scary, but in a sad way, instead of a thrilling way. The chapters about the parasites were scarier, to be honest. Overall, the worldbuilding here was top-notch, but the story itself was a bit of a nothingburger. ( )

LOVED the portions talking about the parasites. The way Scott summarizes how certain parasites work makes me wish he'd write an entire book like that. Very interesting inclusion into a storyline. ( )

This is some seriously inventive science fiction, written in an engaging style that's bound to spark young readers' interest in biology and parasitology. For adults, this scientific take on a hoary old subject will inspire admiration in the ability of an original talent to mine fresh ore from even the oldest veins.
