Ronia, the Robber's Daughter by Astrid Lindgren (ammodramus88)
ammodramus88: Both of these stories feature young women with minds of their own living in a northern European environment filled with folkloric beings. The mood is different in each story (Ronia's story seems to be a happier one, while Travel Light is more of an elegy for things going away), but there is a basic similarity between them.… (more)

Good quick read touching on serious topics ie. politics, greed, violence and love.

The beginning of this book is its strength, it kind of looses its power forward the end. Despite that I would recommend it and read more by the author. ( )

Oh, I am so glad I finally read this book. A fairy tale that is a delight, a comfort read that is also dark and grim. This is a fantasy book that went against the fantasy canon before there was one. Now I just have to get my hands on all the other books Naomi Mitchison had written. ( )

I don't normally pay much attention to blurbs, but a blurb from Ursula K. Le Guin, on top of the publication being from an imprint of Small Beer Press, made this little book irresistible even when the cover copy left me less than sure it would be for me. In the end, though, I'm so glad I stumbled upon it.

This short fairy-tale-esque novel sprawls over so many different territories, and with such a unique coming-of-age story. I was enchanted from the very beginning, and am somewhat shocked I hadn't heard of the author before now. What began as a sweetly amusing fairy tale turned into something deeper and more meaningful as the world and the character progressed, and left me in a bit of wonder.

I'd absolutely recommend it. ( )

Meh, I don’t see what all the fuss is about, and I don’t understand the comparisons to Tolkien and Lewis in the reviews. Maybe some deeper meaning will come to me later. ( )

Book description
From the book cover: "Little Halla lives in the land and time of myth and misty antiquity. A king's daughter, she is cast out by the new wicked queen. But Matulli, her nurse, changes into a black bear and carries her unharmed into the woods. Halla is brought up by bears and dragons, thinking dragonish thoughts and speaking the dragon tongue. In time this world dies away and she meets a strange figure, All-Father, the Wanderer. Setting her on the back of a unicorn he cuts a fold from his night-blue cloak, lays it over her shoulders and sends her on a long journey. Strange and fabulous adventures ensue as Halla takes up the cause of the men from Marob and travels with them to the fabled city of Micklegard where she will learn to do as All-Father bids - to travel light."
