(4) | None | This guidebook of walks explores Germany's Bavarian Alps. Lying along the German-Austrian border in a thin sliver of land roughly 300km long, this area contains some of the most spectacular walking and beautiful scenery that Germany has to offer. 70 graded walks explore mountain landscapes, wild mountain gorges and alpine meadows as well as the region's picturesque villages, opulent baroque churches and fairy-tale castles like Neuschwanstein. The walks are divided into six mountain areas, grouped around base towns to make planning a walking holiday as easy as possible. Bases include Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald, Marquartstein, Inzell, Oberammergau and Ramsau among others. Mountain walks are mainly between 3 and 8 hours duration, though some longer walks are included staying at mountain huts. The guidebook gives an outline of two multi-day tours and suggestions for shorter valley walks of less than 3hrs are also included. Relaxing beer gardens, colourful local traditions and excellent tourist infrastructure add to the region's charms, and make the Bavarian Alps the perfect destination for a walking holiday.… (more) |

Book description |
ISBN 1852842296 (1st. edition, 1997): The Bavarian Alps, lying on the German - Austrian border, have a charm all of their own. No Matterhorns or Mont Blancs here, but an equally picturesque blend of valleys, foothills, gorges and mountain peaks that lie virtually on the doorstep of the local towns. Strewn along the edge of the alps are beautiful lakes, fairy-tale castles, churches and villages waiting to be enjoyed and explored after a walk in the mountains or on 'rest' days. Fifty seven excellent walks are described by the authors, covering the Allgau, Ammergau, Wetterstein, Tegernsee, Chiemgau and Berchtesgaden alps. Each area has its own attractive centres such as Oberammergau, Garmish - Partenkirchen and Bad Reichenhall. Walks vary from strolls of a few miles to 3 or 4 day outings with Alpine hut stopovers and many are circular. They can be confidently undertaken by anyone who is reasonably fit. The delights of the Bavarian scenery added to a temperate climate, a good choice of accommodation and eating places, and good transport access make for an excellent holiday destination.
More walks appear to have been added in later editions. | |
