He was dragged from the sea, his body riddled with bullets. There are a few clues: a frame of microfilm surgically implanted beneath the skin of his hip; evidence that plastic surgery has altered his face; strange things he says in his delirium, which could be code words. And a number on the film negative that leads to a bank account in Zurich, four million dollars and a name for the amnesiac: Jason Bourne. Now he is running for his life. A man with an unknown past and an uncertain future, the target of assassins and at the heart of a deadly puzzle.

I picked this up as a book written the year I was born and with the hope that it would be an engrossing but not terribly deep book to distract me from the state of the world. Given that this launched a successful book and movie series, I thought I might find it interesting. Instead, I actually found myself bored. There's a lot of repetition that drags the book down and extra twists and turns (that aren't actually twists and turns) that just end nowhere. I was also endlessly annoyed by the character of Marie. It was obvious that she was going to become the love interest/accomplice early on, but it became harder and harder to believe as she is badly treated again and again by Bourne. But then he rescues her (from a sexual assault that she only suffered because she was with him, and she was only with him because he'd literally held her at gunpoint) so it's all forgiven and true love, etc? All in all, not my cup of tea. ( )

Much better than the movie - in fact, if you've seen the movie you have no idea what the whole story is!

I loved the movies and was a bit disappointed in this, the first book in the series. The author in my opinion added a little too much detail and repeated portions of the story over and over. I'm starting the second book today and I hope it's a bit more to my liking. ( )

DIPLOMATS SAID TO BE LINKED WITH FUGITIVE TERRORIST KNOWN AS CARLOS.

France expelled three high-ranking Cuban diplomats in connection with the worldwide search for the man called Carlos, who is believed to be an important link in an international terrorist network. (Preface)
The trawler plunged into the angry swells of the dark, furious sea like an awkward animal trying desperately to break out of an impenetrable swamp.
