This book tells a family history of five generations. What is there connection with the village of Veenhuizen in the peat areas in the north part of the Netherlands? A village build as a location where the poor could come (or later: were sent) to start a new live and get a better life (better?). Nowadays it's a small village where the houses of the keepers used to live are still inhabited. The other buildings became modern prisons and a new one was added.

The author tells about her predecessors and their live. And she tells about the generation, tells background and makes the story alive. A great read.
