Helena, obra de Machado de Assis, conta a história de Helena, que, considerada filha bastarda, é reconhecida e acolhida pela família de seu pai quando este morre. O livro inicia sua trama exatamente nesse momento, quando Conselheiro Vale, pai de Helena, tem sua morte causada por apoplexia, após seu cochilo. Deixa o filho Estácio, a irmã D. O conselheiro Vale morreu às 7 horas da noite de 25 de abril de 1850. Morreu de apoplexia fulminante, pouco depois de cochilar a sesta, -- segundo costumava dizer, -- e quando se preparava a ir jogar a usual partida de voltarete em casa de um desembargador, seu amigo.
Counselor Valle died at seven o'clock on hte night of April 25, 1850. He died of a sudden stroke of apoplexy shortly after his siesta of forty winks, (as he used to call it) while he was getting ready to go play the usual game of ombre at the home of a supreme court judge.

A história de uma moça que, de uma forma inesperada, sobe na escala social: morre o Conselheiro Vale e, no seu testamento, consta que Helena, moça internada num colégio de Botafogo, é sua filha, cujo segredo o conselheiro o mantivera até a morte. Helena passa a viver com Úrsula, irmã do conselheiro, Estácio, agora meio-irmão, Dr. Camargo, amigo de Vale e médico da família, e Eugênia, filha do Dr. Camargo. Helena em face de seu temperamento expansivo e comunicativo, conquista a afeição de D. Úrsula e de Estácio. Mendonça, amigo de Estácio, apaixona-se pela moça. Helena passa a ser objeto de afeição do próprio irmão, que, no entanto, está noivo de Eugênia. O padre Melchior, guia espiritual da família, suspeita dos freqüentes encontros entre Helena e Salvador. O mistério é esclarecido: Salvador é o pai de Helena, que fora arrebatada pelo conselheiro,- encarregando-se de sua educação. Helena, profundamente chocada com o estado de coisas, mesmo com a possibilidade de poder casar com Estácio, não agüenta a emoção, adoece e morre.
