Work Information

A Gift of Dragons by Anne McCaffrey

  1. 10
Legends II: New Short Novels by the Masters of Modern Fantasy by Robert Silverberg (Aldrea_Alien)
Aldrea_Alien: Legends II also has an Anne McCaffrey tale ('Beyond between') which deals with what happens to dragons and riders after they die. A little heavier than the sweet tales told in A Gift of Dragons, but interesting non-the-less.

Anne McCaffrey is the quintessential writer of fantasy books pertaining to dragons. These books are always wonderful, well written, and perfectly characterized. All of her series are great but the ones that take place on Pern are the best of all. Really great read. ( )

Four tales of Pern in one illustrated volume: Smallest Dragon Boy; Girl Who Heard Dragons; Runner of Pern; and Ever the Twain.

In "The Smallest Dragonboy," Keevan is the youngest dragonrider candidate, determined to impress a dragon when the next clutch of eggs hatches. But what transpires will surprise everyone - Keevan most of all. In "The Girl Who Heard Dragons," a young girl's rare ability to communicate with dragons puts her family in danger and will bring her face to face with her greatest fears - and with her most secret desire. The "Runner of Pern" is a girl named Tenna, who follows family tradition by delivering messages - and who will find her destiny on the mossy traces that runners have used for centuries under the dragon-filled sky. And finally, a very special gift: an exciting new Pern adventure, published here for the first time, fresh from the imagination of Anne McCaffrey. ( )

I'm not a short story fan, and there's no real need to read them for completeness.

Good entry into the World of Pern; vignettes that give the flavor of this great and sustaining series. It would be a good starting book for a young person. ( )

This is a small volume composed of four stories. First is "The Smallest Dragonboy", in which we follow the smallest Candidate, Keevan, as he seeks to Impress a dragon. This was copyrighted in 1973. Next is "The Girl who Heard Dragons," about a holdless family forced to flee from their temporary home. Aramina is the one who hears dragons, and they hear her. This was previously published in 1994. The following story is "Runner of Pern" about Tenna, who runs messages as a long-distance runner. This follows her start as a Runner. It was previously published in 1998. The last story is "Ever the Twain" about the twins, Nian and Neru, found on a Search for candidates. It was written in 2002, for this anthology. These are classic McCaffrey stories, with her accustomed eye for detail and the central place of dragons in the society. ( )
