Achilles the young donkey lives a happy life in Greece with his mother. She is a;ways telling him that he is named after the greatest runner in Ancient Greece. All is well until he is sold and transported to the island of Mykonos where his new owner,a surly and nasty old man takes him over. He is overworked and underfed and completely unhappy. Soon he makes friends with a pelican called Popo who helps him to run away and find a happy home once more.
The combination of the prose of H.E.Bates with the beautiful illustrations by Carol Barker make this book a pure joy. ( )
