A (the?) high point of Bendis's DD run, itself a high point of the title. He gets to get deep into the quirks and juxtaposition of the pathos and the everyday that was his hallmark before he went straight superhero but after he got over his early thing about how cramped blacknwhite arts meant noir and to swear was to rebel. This story is a selfcontained, creepy little mystery that unfolds itself to us gradually and contains a kernel of genuine horror. It also manages to semi-rehabilitate ninjas as an interesting plot element in the Marvel Universe, which with the way others, Bendis in New Avengers not excluded, are always running down the brand, is a welcome counter-action. Quite an interesting storyline, in which a Hell's Kitchen church group is holding a basement group conversation to discuss what to make of the new developments in the Daredevil saga (remember, he has beaten the Kingpin with his fists and taken over Hell's Kitchen). It turns out that the people there have many secrets, including one who has ingested an ancient demon which has impacted the lives of other members of the group, and has now attracted Matt Murdock to the meeting. Beyond the bare bones of it, this is quite an affecting story which gets pretty deep into why Matt dresses up like a devil and runs around Hell's Kitchen, and how the people he protects feel about that. I am still not fond of Alex Maleev's muddy artwork, though, particularly his stilted action scenes. A more gifted artist can draw an action scene and make it look like a video. You can see the movement. With Maleev, it all looks like a still life. ( )
