Un romanzo coinvolgente perché oltre a narrare una vicenda appassionante ma poco conosciuta della storia dell'Impero Romano, rifugge dallo stereotipo di un eroe in lotta contro il nemico e narra le vicende di chi combatte per il ripristino dell'ordine nelle province così come di chi questo ordine vuole distruggerlo. Questo senza dare giudizi di merito e senza dividere gli schieramente in figure che siano "buone" o "cattive" per il solo gusto di esserlo.
Tale elemento è così sviluppato che non è neppure possibile identificare un vero e proprio protagonista: tutti sono attori sullo sfondo di un mondo ormai in declino.
